Lameness in horses can be obvious or quite complicated to diagnose. Therefore, we take a systematic approach to determine if and where the horse is experiencing pain and its cause. We combine diagnostics with gait evaluations to determine the cause of lameness, including:
- Musculoskeletal exam to check for heat, swelling, pain, range of motion, and movement.
- Movement and “flexion” tests at different gaits.
- Nerve blocks as a diagnostic tool to further pinpoint a source of pain.
We refer to NC State Veterinary Hospital for MRI, bone scans, major medical and surgical needs, and regenerative therapies (platelet-rich plasma therapy and stem cell therapy).
